Olive tree purchase is quite an awesome task as there
are so many different varieties to choose from. In fact there are over
900 different varieties with their own unique characteristics.
Choose the correct varirty when moving ahead with an olive tree purchase. Olive trees do not graft very easily and therefore
once you've made your choice and planted it that is it. There is no
going back unless you chop it down and replant elsewhere.
The important thing to think about first is whether you live in a
climate that the olive tree can tolerate. Traditionally they live in a
Mediterranean climate but with the planet getting warmer there are more
and more places where olive trees can be grown. especially in the United States.
That said if your winters are cold with temperatures plummeting past -5
degrees below zero it is probably not worth considering an olive tree
purchase for your garden or plot of land. Similarly if you live in an
area exposed to strong winds, then olive trees are probably not for you
as they are quite shallow rooted.
Another check before any olive tree purchase is the type of soil you
have. Olive trees are pretty tolerant of most soils but heavy clay
soils are not good as they require good drainage. If in doubt it is
worthwhile talking to an expert at your local garden nursery.
If you are planning on planting a large number of olive trees with a
view to producing your own olive oil, think carefully about the
varieties you buy. Some of the best olive oils are created with a blend
of multiple varieties, so planting a mix could prove to be very
advantageous.
If a field is planted to a mixture of varietals that are harvested
together it should produce much more interesting oil than if you just
use the one variety. Crushing and pressing different olives varieties
at different stages of ripeness will produce a better tasting oil.
So if you want to produce your own olive oil, how many olive tree purchase will do you
need? Well you probably will need to have at least an acre of
trees. This means planting somewhere between 100 and 200 trees.
To achieve this you do of course need a lot of land but also you need
to bear in mind the man power required to look after the trees. So
before committing to an olive tree purchase in large volumes think
about how you are going to harvest the fruits. This is important as
using machinery will damage the fruits and therefore they should really
be handpicked.
Whether you plan on have a large orchard or just a small olive tree to
adorn your garden, planting these attractive trees can be a very
rewarding experience. Not only do they look good with their grey-green
leaves but will with some luck provide you with a nice little crop.
Nice little olives added to a salad or a light drizzling of olive oil
tastes so good.
